PCT named us
We believe the best skincare comes from the earth itself — not a lab. But the name? That's a different kind of story.
We came to tallow skincare the honest way — by trying everything else first. Lotion after lotion, serum after serum, nothing truly hydrated our skin the way tallow did. It turns out there's a reason for that: grass-fed beef tallow is remarkably similar in structure to our skin's own natural sebum, making it uniquely compatible in a way that synthetic moisturizers simply can't replicate. Once we tried it, there was no going back.
But how did we land on the name Mountain Tallow? Well, that story involves a midnight intruder, a brand new tent, and a very determined field mouse on the Pacific Crest Trail...
The summer of 2024, three girlfriends and I tackled Section J of the Pacific Crest Trail — a 75-mile stretch from Stevens Pass to Snoqualmie. Ambitious, some said, considering I was only six months into recovery from a compound leg fracture.
Our first night at Hope Lake was peaceful — until we discovered we weren't alone. I tucked my favorite tallow chapstick into my brand new tent's vestibule and drifted off to sleep. Around midnight, something landed on my back. Headlamp on — a field mouse stared back at me. Yes, I screamed. At a tiny mouse. In my brand new tent.
After a tense standoff (my friend Kari even suggested using her shoe — no thanks), I evicted the intruder. But the little critter had already chewed a hole straight through my brand new tent to get to the chapstick. Smart mouse — he knew a good thing when he smelled it.
By morning, the chapstick was gone. That crafty mouse is probably still enjoying it today.
On the PCT, hikers earn trail names. After that night, mine became Tallow. And that, my friends, is how Mountain Tallow was born.
